Choosing the right hairstyle for your face shape – Luc Vincent

For the hairdresser, morphology is limited to the study of the shape of the face and it simply consists of determining the hairstyle and cut that will best suit the face studied.

To create your face profile, you'll need at least two mirrors. You'll also need to slick your hair back to clearly see your face shape (note: you should be makeup-free).

There are six main facial shapes (as seen from the front) and four important profile shapes. Ladies, not all of you have round faces, as you might imagine! To find out for sure, do the analysis described below.

The so-called "perfect" face is oval. Since it's the most pleasing to the eye, this is the shape you'll try to recreate with your hairstyle.

Always keep in mind that no one is perfect: Marilyn Monroe was cross-eyed, Cleopatra had a long nose, and Julia Roberts has a mouth that's disproportionate to the rest of her face!

Here are three examples among others which perfectly illustrate the possibility of taking advantage of certain morphological particularities .

Unless they are true "flaws," these features should not be corrected. It is often better to take advantage of your "flaws" rather than try to correct them: they will add personality to your face and make it unique.

2- The face is divided into three sections:

  • The brain section (from the hairline to below the eyebrows);
  • The respiratory section (from below the eyebrows to the bottom of the nose);
  • The digestive section (from below the nose to the bottom of the chin).

These three sections should be of equal length in a well-balanced face.

2- Face shape and volume

Another unit of measurement: the eye. Measure the width of your eye. Your face should measure five "eyes" across from the inside of your hairline, or from one temple to the other.

In length, your face should measure six or seven "eyes" from the top center of your hairline, or forehead, to your chin.

The tips of your hair are a guidepost to attract the attention of those looking at you. It can be used to divert their attention from a flaw, or draw it to one of your morphological qualities, such as your eyes or lips.

1- The Morphology of the Oval Face

The oval face is defined by perfect balance. Its roundness is slightly elongated vertically, the cheekbones are defined, and the space between the two eyes is equal to the width of one eye.

An oval face fits almost any hairstyle, as the perfect shape has already been achieved.

It is said that a woman with an oval face needs to be surrounded and understood.

2- The Morphology of the Round Face

The round face is recognizable by its very pronounced roundness. The vertical and horizontal "length" are practically equal. The masseter muscles (section of the cheek between the ear and the eye) are developed near the eyes or enhanced by a layer of fat.

To correct this morphology, you need to add volume to the top of the head and clear the lower part of the face. You can achieve the same result by letting the hair around the face hang as straight as possible: it will give the impression of vertical length. However, it is important that the hair extends slightly past the chin so as not to emphasize the beginning of the curve leading up to it.

A woman with a round face is said to be fulfilled and sociable.

3- The Morphology of the Square Face

The square face is as long as it is wide. The jaw and forehead are pronounced in width.

To remedy this, opt for a wraparound hairstyle, which surrounds the face with rounded strands. This will give you the coveted oval shape, in addition to some volume on top of the head.

Avoid bulk at the temples, sides, and neck. What you need is rounded bangs—shorter in the center of the face and longer on the sides—which will give the face an even more circular effect.

A woman with a square face is said to be frank and direct.

4- The Morphology of the Rectangular Face

A rectangular face is one that is longer than it is wide, characterized by very short hair or a side parting. In the case of an asymmetrical short haircut (very short on one side and longer on the other), the longer side should reach the chin and even extend slightly past it.

If you have long hair, avoid tying it up in a ponytail. Instead, leave some strands at the nape of your neck that will be visible from the front and even at your temples. If you can, curl these strands and, even better, give them some volume.

A woman with a rectangular face is said to be unpredictable.

5- The Morphology of the Diamond Face

The diamond-shaped face is characterized by a forehead whose central point forms a triangle with the temples. The same configuration is observed in the lower part of the face: the masseter muscles, very pronounced under the eyes, cause a "V"-shaped descent down to the chin.

This face shape is made up of two inverted triangles. This can be corrected by avoiding straightening your hair. Instead, tie it up and add volume to your temples, but definitely not on your head. A few strands of hair on your neck and temples can enhance your appearance.

For short hair, we will increase the volume at the temples, we can give a little, if necessary, on the top of the head and we will keep hair on the nape of the neck which we will make visible from the front to give width to the jaw.

The lower part of the face can be corrected, just as with a triangular face. Asymmetrical cuts work well, but only if they create volume at the temples. Wide bangs can also be useful for the upper part of the face.

The diamond-faced woman is said to be generous and kind, and to love people.

Note that it is possible that your face combines characteristics of more than one type.

6- The trapezoidal face morphology

The trapezoid face is characterized by a narrow forehead and temples. In some cases, the eyes are closer together and the jaw is prominent, although rounded, as the cheeks are often rather round.

To correct this morphology, add a little volume to the temples and crown of the head to create balance with the cheeks and elongate the face. Wear your hair down on the cheeks (wedges for short hair and strands on either side of the cheeks for long, straight hair). It's best to have the hair length that extends past the jawline to elongate the face downwards.

Avoid volume at the nape of the neck and a convex cut. If you want to wear bangs, they should be worn to the side to clear part of the forehead, especially if the eyes are close together. If you don't wear bangs, sweep them away from the forehead to give length to the face.

A woman with a trapezoid face is said to be shy, discreet and determined.

7- The Morphology of the Triangular Face

You have a triangular face if your forehead is wider, with a more pointed chin, giving it a triangle shape.

Often referred to as a heart-shaped face, simply add a little volume to the top of the head. Avoid volume at the temples, but add a little volume to the sides and jawline. Long or medium-length hair is often ideal for this face shape.

A woman with a triangular face is said to be unpredictable.
