Mistakes to avoid for successful coloring at home

Coloring your hair at home can be an excellent alternative to going to the salon, provided you follow a few essential rules.

Improper application or common mistakes can affect the results and color retention. Here are the key steps to follow and the mistakes to avoid for successful coloring like a pro!

1. Never forget the allergy test

The first step before any coloring is to perform an allergy test, and yet, many people forget it.

Why is this important? Although allergic reactions are rare, they can be severe. That's why it's imperative to test the product 48 hours before application.

📌 How to do it?

  • Apply a small amount of coloring mixture behind the ear or on the forearm.
  • Wait 48 hours without washing or rubbing the area.
  • If no reaction (redness, itching, swelling) appears, you can safely apply the coloring.

Tip: All allergy test instructions are included in the Luc Vincent stain box. Take the time to read them before you begin.

2. Not washing your hair just before coloring

Many people think that you need to have clean hair before applying color.

Error !

Why? Washing your hair too recently (less than 48 hours ago) removes the scalp's natural sebum, which acts as a protective barrier against irritation and tingling sensations.

📌 What to do:

  • Do not wash your hair for at least 48 hours before coloring.
  • Also avoid styling products and concealers that can alter the color's hold.

The result? A more even color and a better protected scalp.

3. Respect the proportions of the coloring mixture

Another common pitfall is blending products roughly. Mixing by eye can compromise the final color and hold.

📌 The right proportions:

✔ Luc Vincent hair colors follow a 1:1 mixture: 50g of color + 50g of oxidant. ✔ Use a precision scale to measure the exact amount needed.

Why is this essential? Incorrect dosage can make the color too runny or too thick, affecting coverage and distribution of the product on the hair.

4. Apply the color in two steps

Many people apply the entire color all at once to their hair. Big mistake!

📌 The right method:

  • First apply the color to the roots and leave on for the recommended time.
  • Prepare a new mixture for the lengths and ends, as the coloring oxidizes over time and loses its effectiveness.

The result? A uniform and vibrant color!

5. Protect your workspace and your clothes

Poorly controlled coloring also causes stains on clothes, towels and even the floor!

📌 Precautions to take:

✔ Protect your surfaces with a towel or paper towel.

✔ Wear an old t-shirt or towel around your shoulders.

✔ Clean up spills on furniture or floors immediately to avoid stubborn stains.

Tip: If a drop of coloring falls on the floor, wipe it off immediately before it dries and becomes impossible to remove.

6. Avoid excessive heat and dry shampoos

After coloring, it is important to adopt a suitable routine to preserve the intensity of the color.

📌 What to avoid:

❌ A hair dryer that is too hot and too close to the scalp, which stimulates sebum production and can alter the color.

❌ Dry shampoos containing alcohol, which can dry out the scalp and affect color consistency.

✔ Prefer gentle drying and alcohol-free shampoos to prolong the shine of your color.

Beautiful color starts with good practices!

For successful coloring at home, just follow these simple steps:

  • Take the allergy test 48 hours beforehand
  • Do not wash your hair 48 hours before coloring
  • Respect the proportions of the coloring mixture
  • Apply the color in two steps: roots first, then lengths
  • Protect your workspace and your clothes
  • Adopt a good post-coloring routine to prolong the hold

By following these tips, you will achieve a vibrant, uniform and long-lasting color without any unpleasant surprises!
